5th / 6th Class
5th and 6th class have been learning about WW2 and the ‘Emergency’ in Ireland. As part of their research they discovered that in 1940 the British Government introduced food rationing. In Ireland rations were more relaxed but people still had to cut down on their tea, sugar and butter.
In response to the rationing, many cookbooks were made, to show people that they could still bake and cook nice things while not using up all of their rations. Students found a ration recipe from WW2 for Honey Cookies and baked them in school.
Ms McGrane then treated everyone to chocolate chip cookies (ones that didn’thold back on butter, sugar or chocolate!) so that they could compare the honey cookies to cookies from today. While the honey cookies were surprisingly delicious, todays cookies were definitely tastier!
